Viswanathan Anand Takes Charge as FIDE Interim President
In a major development in the governance of world chess, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich has announced that he is voluntarily suspending his powers and duties as President with immediate effect. In accordance with FIDE, Viswanathan Anand, the 15th World Chess Champion and current Deputy President of FIDE, has taken over as the Interim President of the International Chess Federation.
The Background: EU Sanctions and Voluntary Step-Down
The decision comes following the European Union's publication of its 21st sanctions list, which included the name of the FIDE President.
Directly addressing the situation, Arkady Dvorkovich stated:
"Today, the EU decision to include my name in the 21st sanctions list was published. I want to state unequivocally that I consider this decision unlawful and unfair, and this decision will be immediately challenged by all possible means. I am confident that justice will prevail.
However, given that until a formal court decision is rendered and/or such decision is cancelled or amended, these sanctions could hinder the stable functioning of FIDE, I have decided to voluntarily suspend the exercise of my powers and duties as FIDE President with immediate effect and for as long as I remain subject to sanctions under the EU and Swiss laws and regulations."
Dvorkovich reiterated his trust in the governing body, adding that he remains confident in the FIDE Council and administration to safeguard the continuous work, events, and social programs of world chess during this transition.

FIDE Council Decisions & Viswanathan Anand Step-Up
Following Dvorkovich's statement, the FIDE Council convened and officially ratified the decisions:
Ratification of Suspension: The FIDE Council accepted and ratified the decision of Mr. Arkady Dvorkovich to suspend the exercise of his rights, duties, and prerogatives as President. He will not act as the controller or holder of FIDE or its assets as long as EU and Swiss sanctions remain in force.
Appointment of Interim President: In accordance with Article 19.2 of the FIDE Charter, Viswanathan Anand (Deputy President of FIDE) will assume the role of Interim President for the duration of these restrictive measures.
