Pune GM Round Robin 2026 begins tomorrow at The Fern Habitat

by Vivek Sohani - 29/06/2026

The Title norm hunt has long been the most expensive hurdle for aspiring Indian Grandmasters- but Pune is about to rewrite that script after Tamil Nadu. From June 30th to July 8th, 2026, the inaugural Pune International Grandmaster Round Robin Tournament is bringing the titleholders from globe right to Maharashtra's doorstep. This historic event merges the decades-long grassroots dedication of the Kunte family’s Buddhibal Kreeda Trust with the modern, inclusive hospitality of Balraj Singh Ghai’s The Fern Habitat. This powerhouse collaboration is cutting down travel costs by 80% and proving that Indian chess is ready to claim its home-court advantage.

The Great Norm Migration: How Pune is Changing the Map of Indian Chess

For years, an aspiring Indian chess professional faced a harsh, expensive reality: if you wanted to become a Grandmaster, you had to book a flight to Europe. Securing GM and IM norms required competing against international titleholders, an endeavor that cost lakhs of rupees in flights, visas, and hotels. Except for the recent revolution in Tamil Nadu's norm circuits, the rest of India remained a barren ground for elite closed round-robin events.

Now, Pune is stepping up to break that monopoly. From June 30th to July 8th, 2026, The Fern Habitat in Mundhwa is playing host to the inaugural Pune International Grandmaster Round Robin Tournament.

The Visionaries Behind the Board

The blueprint for this tournament is built on the legacies of two distinct entities: a family that gave Pune its competitive chess DNA, and an entrepreneur changing how chess events are hosted and experienced.

The visionaries met here first time! - at the centre of frame - Balraj Singh Ghai & GM Abhijit Kunte

1. The Kunte Family & Buddhibal Kreeda Trust (BKT)

Long before India became a global chess superpower, Shri Prakash Kunte founded the Buddhibal Kreeda Trust (BKT) with a singular passion: raising Pune's chess standard to the global stage. He literally built champions in his own home - producing India's 4th Grandmaster, Abhijit Kunte, and WIM Mrunalini Kunte. Over the decades, BKT hasn't just coached; they have selflessly subsidized foreign trip expenses for local prodigies, ensuring financial constraints didn't choke out raw talent. For months, Prakash Kunte envisioned a world-class round-robin event at home so Indian players could chase titles without the burden of international travel. This tournament is the crowning milestone of that lifetime devotion.

Mr. Prakash Kunte - pioneer organizer, grassroots visionary, and the driving force behind bringing the International GM Norm circuit to Pune.

2. Balraj Singh Ghai & The Habitat

Enter Balraj Singh Ghai, famously known in the community as "The Gentleman." The owner of Habitat has rapidly transformed Pune into a warm, inclusive sanctuary for the mind game. Just a few months ago in March, Balraj partnered with comedian and chess evangelist Samay Raina to host the Super Heroes Cup 2026.

The Gentleman- Balraj Singh Ghai!

While Samay brought a ₹5 lakh prize pool funded entirely from his PogChamps winnings, Balraj did something extraordinary: he opened the doors to the newly launched Habitat Studio and fully sponsored the premium stay, food, and accessible venue logistics for 16 of India's top differently-abled chess players and their caretakers. Now, by positioning The Fern Habitat as the official venue partner for the GM Round Robin, Balraj is once again providing elite infrastructure to the sport.

This isn't just another tournament; it's a massive story of two distinct forces coming together to build a world-class chess ecosystem right in Maharashtra.

Changing the Economics of Indian Chess

What makes this event a monumental shift? It's the first major norm-setting event of its kind happening outside of Tamil Nadu (moving past the established TN norm circuit and Chola Chess events).

By hosting international Grandmasters (including elite players like Abhijeet Gupta and international titleholders from Belarus and Sri Lanka) right in Pune, the financial equation completely changes for the contenders:

  • Zero International Airfare: No expensive flights across time zones.

  • No Visa Hassles: No waiting months for European embassies to clear travel documents.

  • Home Court Advantage: Indian youngsters get to play high-stakes, 9-round FIDE-rated "fighting chess" (where no draw agreements are allowed before Move 30) in a comfortable environment.

The Reality Check: A single European norm hunt can easily drain ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakhs from a middle-class Indian family. Bringing the GMs to Pune cuts that cost down by over 80%, democratizing the path to the Grandmaster title.

Indian chess isn't just ready for something astonishing it is actively living it. The collaboration between the foundational grit of the Kunte family and the modern corporate hospitality of Balraj Ghai proves that when the right people come together, the entire ecosystem moves forward.
