Men's Premier 07: first IM norm for Praneeth

by Priyadarshan Banjan - 22/11/2015

The seventh round could produce only one result -- Vidit beat Arghyadip to take a comfortable one point lead over the second-placed P. Karthikeyan, who drew a very strange game against Rathnakaran. Amidst all these draws, Praneeth Surya scored the first IM-norm of his fledgling career as he was held by Murali Karthikeyan, who at one point had a worse position.

FM Praneeth Surya

The past one year has witnessed Praneeth increase a hefty 200 Elo points, and win a qualification to the National Premier by finishing runner-up at the National Challengers in Nagpur. Competing amongst the stalwarts here, Praneeth has already mustered up 3.5/7 to score a nine-game IM norm.

"Finally, I did it after coming close and losing out for past four years...," he said after the game.

Rathnakaran's rook reached a2 quite early...

Karthikeyan managed to get his piece trapped in the black side of a Bishop's Opening in return for two pawns. However, Rathna missed his chance, and in the end was even lucky to get away with a draw!

Sethu had a superior position but a suspicious 30...Rd4 allowed...

...IM P. Shyaamnikhil back in the game

Shyaam, after he gained the upper-hand, missed numerous methods to seal the deal. In the end, he took a repetition in what looked like a better position for him.

An all-important clash with the leader Vidit awaits Sethu in Round 8, which may be a golden opportunity for the latter to throw the tournament wide open.
