A World Cup winner walks into a chess team: Gerard Piqué joins Fyers American Gambits
Barcelona's legendary centre-back, a 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 champion, and one of sport's most restless entrepreneurs is now a stakeholder in a chess franchise. Gerard Piqué has come on board the Fyers American Gambits as a strategic shareholder, joining former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin in the ownership group, ahead of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Season 4 in Bengaluru (3rd-13th September 2026). It is the biggest crossover chess has seen between football and the 64 squares.
On Monday, 17th August 2026, at an event in Bengaluru, the Fyers American Gambits unveiled Gerard Piqué as a strategic shareholder of the franchise. Three weeks before the Global Chess League returns to India, the team has added a name that needs no introduction in any football-watching household on the planet.

This is not a jersey sponsorship or an ambassadorial photo-op. Piqué comes in as a part-owner, and he brings with him something the chess world has very little of: a decade of hands-on experience in building sporting properties from scratch, taking them global, and turning fans into communities. “Chess has fascinated me for a long time because of its depth, its global appeal and the incredible mental strength it demands,” the former Barcelona player said.

The Gambits are already an unusual franchise in that sense. Co-owned by Ravichandran Ashwin - one of the sharpest cricketing minds of his generation and a genuine chess enthusiast - and backed by the technology-first brokerage Fyers as title sponsor, the team has consistently positioned itself as the tech-and-data franchise of the league. Adding a Champions League and World Cup winner to that mix is a statement of intent: American Gambits do not simply want to win the GCL, they want to become a sporting brand that exists 365 days a year.
For most of its history, the game has attracted patrons - kings, industrialists, philanthropists. What it has rarely attracted is investors from other sports who look at a chessboard and see a business. That is exactly what happened in Bengaluru on Monday.

After Haaland became an investor at the Total Chess Championships all set to happen in Budapest later this year, it is now time for Gerard Pique to enter in!
Prachura PP, the CEO and Co-owner of the Gambits, said: “Gerard Piqué’s investment is a landmark moment for our franchise and, we believe, for the evolution of chess as a global sport. Gerard understands what it takes to build a global sporting property, one that combines elite competition with compelling storytelling, passionate communities and a strong connection with fans. His belief in our vision is incredibly meaningful as we look to build a franchise that can represent the future of chess.
