India dominates at the Western Asian Rapids 2019

by Satanick Mukhuty - 06/09/2019

The Western Asian Youth and Junior Chess Championship 2019 kicked off yesterday at the Hotel Tivoli Grand Resort in New Delhi with an action-packed seven-round rapid tournament. As expected, India bagged 15 out of the 16 gold medals at stake to commence the event with a dominating statement. The only gold that eluded grasp was in the under-18 open event where it was Mukhammadali Abdurakhmonov of Uzbekistan who clinched the title finishing half a point ahead of the rest of the field. While the host claimed 43 out of the total 48 medals, Uzbekistan was second with a lone gold, followed by Bangladesh and Tajikistan with a silver each. Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka settled for a bronze each. The classical section begins at 9:30 am IST from today and will continue till the 10th of September. The event will wind up with Blitz games on the final day.

The Western Asian Youth and Junior Chess Championship is being played out in sixteen different age categories featuring all three formats - rapid, classical, and blitz. Among the total of 859 players participating, as many as 703 are Indians. The Sri Lankan contingent, with 36 of its participants, makes for the next largest representation in the event followed by Nepal, Bangladesh, and Uzbekistan.

One of the biggest attractions of the event is its lucrative offers of norms and titles. For instance, gold medallists of Under-18 categories shall be awarded the title of International Master (IM) or Woman International Master (WIM), and 1st equal players (best three after tie break) shall also get IM/WIM norms. On the other hand, the Silver and Bronze Medal winners shall be awarded the FIDE Master (FM) or Woman FIDE Master (WFM) titles.

A brief opening ceremony preceded the inaugural rapid event which was graced by the presence of AICF secretary Bharath Singh Chauhan | Photo: Puneet Jaiswal

The rapid section of the event was a seven-round swiss following a time control of 10 minutes for the entire game plus 10 seconds increment per move from move one. A pictorial overview of the results in all categories is presented below.
