Tech Mahindra GCL 2025 Day 8: Triveni Continental Kings are through to the Finals with a round to spare

by Shahid Ahmed - 22/12/2025

Triveni Continental Kings are through to the Finals of Tech Mahindra Global Chess League 2025 with a round to spare. Ganges Grandmasters suffered their second loss against TCK which allowed the latter to advance to the Finals. They will face upGrad Mumba Masters in Round 10. Alpine SG Pipers defeated uMM and FYERS American Gambits to move to the second position 15/27. They just need to ensure they do not lose against PBG Alaskan Knights in the last round of double round-robin stage to secure their place in the Finals. Round 10 starts today at 5 p.m. IST with FYERS American Gambits vs Ganges Grandmasters. Photos: Aditya Sur Roy

Alpine SG Pipers need to avoid a loss against PBG Alaskan Knight in Round 10

The primary reason why the defending champion - Triveni Continental Kings has advanced to the Finals can be deduced as the team having no weak links. They have a good cohesion and no reliant on any particular board/player. All six players are capable of winning games when required and thus they have maintained their performance at a different level than the rest of the five teams. It may very well be a different story on how things will go in the Finals. Use code CBIGCL to get 20% Off when you buy tickets on District. Link is at the end of the article.

Match #26: Alpine SG Pipers - Fyers American Gambits: 3-0 (8-7)

For the second consecutive match, GM Yifan Hou (ASGP) scored the decisive win for her team. This time, she defeated GM Bibisara Assaubayeva (FAG). R Praggnanandhaa (ASGP) missed a winning chance against Richard Rapport (FAG).

Rapport - Praggnanandhaa

Position after 27.a4??

27.a4?? was a big mistake as Black could take it due to White's weak back rank. 27...Qxa4!-+ The game eventually liquidated into a bishop vs knight endgame which was winning for Black, thanks to his connected passed pawns on the queenside.

Position after 51.Bd4

Black needed to play a waiting move like 51...Ke8 or f7 so that when White moves the bishop then he can go Nf2, capture the h3-pawn and then win the game. Instead, he blundered 51...b2?? 52.Ka2= a3 53.Kb1 Kf7 54.Ka2 Kg8 the key difference is, now White does not have to move the bishop from d4 and he can simply fix his pawn on f6 as his king has two squares it can move to - a2 and b1.
