Norway Chess Women R5: Humpy emerges sole leader
GM Koneru Humpy defeated GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) in Armageddon to gain sole lead at 2nd Norway Chess Women 2025. After a draw in the Classical battle, the Armageddon was not a smooth game for the victor. Humpy was lost at one point against Tingjie due to her incorrect passive queen retreat. Tingjie could not seize her opportunity, misplayed and blundered her knight in one move to lose the game. GM R Vaishali scored her first three-pointer of the event against IM Sara Khadem (ESP). GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) played two solid draws in both Classical and Armageddon against GM Wenjun Ju (CHN). However, the five-time Women's World Champion had the black pieces in Armageddon, hence she won the match. Round 6 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. Apart from youtube, there is also a live broadcast on Sony Liv. Photo: Norway Chess / Michal Walusza
Vaishali scores her first Classical win of the event
Koneru Humpy has gained sole lead 8.5/15. She is closely followed by Anna Muzychuk 8/15. Wenjun Ju is at 7/15, followed by R Vaishali at 6.5/15.
Humpy - Tingjie: 1.5-1
Last year, at the very same event, GM Koneru Humpy (2543) drew the first Classical game against GM Tingjie Lei (CHN, 2552) and then defeated her in Armageddon. This year, she repeated the same result.
In Armageddon, Humpy changed things up slightly in the opening. A passive queen retreat almost brought her position to the brink of a loss. Her opponent misplayed and then just dropped her knight in one move, gifting a win.
Sara - Vaishali: 0-3
IM Sara Khadem (ESP) played three Classical rated games against GM R Vaishali (2475). They had three different results. In this game, Vaishali outplayed Sara.
Anna - Wenjun: 1-1.5
The last Classical rated games between GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR, 2526) and GM Wenjun Ju (CHN, 2580) took place at the very same event last year. Both of them ended in draws. This time, the first one ended in a solid draw in the Ruy Lopez Berlin.
The Armageddon was also another solid draw. Since, the five-time Women's World Champion had the black pieces, she won the match.
