National Teams 2019 Day 3: PSPB takes sole lead in both Open and Women section

by Shahid Ahmed - 09/02/2019

PSPB defeated AAI in a nail biter finish after all games ended up in a draw. Team PSPB was waiting with baited breath and hoping for Aravindh to convert a long term advantage. Reigning National Champion, GM Aravindh Chithambaram did not disappoint and won a thriller finish which went down to the last seconds in four hour long thrill-ride. In the women section, PSPB women also had an exact same score, however they had three decisive results. Newly crowned Asian Continental Women's Champion IM Padmini Rout picked up the quickest win for her team as she outplayed current National Women's Champion WGM Bhakti Kulkarni. Soumya and Pratyusha were the other two to win for their team whereas Mary Ann lost against Viji which did not make a major impact in the final score. Photo: Gopakumar Sudhakaran/Shahid Ahmed.

Shyam sacrificed an exchange and then missed the right continuation. He played 29...d5. What was the better alternative?

In Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence, Abhimanyu played some solid chess and did not give any chance to his opponent. The game ended up in a draw in Queen-Rook endgame.

Tricky Stany got tricked by GM Karthikeyan Murali in the endgame?

Karthikeyan decided to give up a piece for three pawns. What would you have opted for instead?

This looks a lot like loss, however Karthikeyan had something else in his mind and he snatched a half point

Stany made a wrong capture which resulted in a draw. Can you find the correct continuation for white to win?

PSPB Women takes sole lead at the conclusion of round 4

PSPB Women defeated Air India in a close match with a score of 2.5-1.5 | Photo: Gopakumar Sudhakaran

IM Soumya Swaminathan got a huge space advantage by continuously knocking her opponent's queenside knight around and then it was just a matter of technique to net the full point.

White has a huge space advantage. How should white convert this?

WGM Mary Ann Gomes suffered the only defeat from her team when she got into an inferior opening arising out of TLC system against IM Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi
