KCA 1st GM R7: Balkishan crushes Mehar, maintains pursuit with Aakash

by R Anantharam - 05/05/2025

GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO) defeated one of his coleaders, GM Marat Dzhumaev (UZB) to emerge sole leader 6.5/7 at KCA's God's Own Country's 1st GM 2025. IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ) scored a big win over GM Karen H Grigoryan (ARM). Balkishan A scored a brilliant win over IM Mehar Chinna Reddy C H. He made his intentions clear early in the game and did not give any chance to his opponent to get back in the game. FM Aakash G converted his longterm extra pawn advantage into a win against GM Karen Movsziszian (ARM). Balkishan will have the tall task to stop the sole leader, Pantsulaia. The remaining two pursuers - Aakash and Semetei will clash against each other. Round 8 starts today at 10 a.m. IST. Photo: Shahid Ahmed

Pantsulaia emerges sole leader

GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO) emerged sole leader with 6.5 points at the end of the eighth round of the KCA’s 1st International Chess Festival – Category A Tournament, organised by Kottayam Chess Academy, today. In a major upset of the tournament, top seed GM Karen H Grigoryan (ARM) was shocked by IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ) and the latter is in second position with G Aakash of Tamil Nadu and Balkishan A of Karnataka, who scalped grandmaster Karen Movsziszian (ARM) and IM Mehar Chinna Reddy of SC Railway respectively.

Levan - Marat

Position after 38.c6

Should Black take the c6-pawn in the above diagram? The obvious answer is yes. Because if Black doesn't, there is a good chance that it will haunt him by becoming a passed pawn which is what happened. 38...bxc6 39.Rxc6 Bf8 and Black would have been fine. Instead, 38...b6?? 39.Re4 Bc3 40.Re7 Rd2 41.e4 Bxb4 42.Rxc7 and White went on to win the game, thanks to his passed c6-pawn.

Semetei - Karen

Position after 33...Kg7

IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ, 2313) sacrificed his knight 34.Nxf3! to improve his position 34...gxf3 35.Qe6 Qd2 36.Qd7+ Kh6?? Black needed to retreat his king to h8 and allow perpetual check by the queen to accept a draw. 37.Qxd6+- Qxd3 38.g4 Qe2 39.Kg3 Qe8 40.Qc7 Qe1 41.g5+ Kxg5 42.Qf4+ Black resigned as there is a checkmate on the next move.

Balkishan - Mehar

Position after 17.g5

Balkishan made his intentions clear that he is playing for only one result when he went 16.g4 followed by 17.g5 attacking on his opponent IM Mehar Chinna Reddy C H's (2398) hook on h6. 17...hxg5 18.Rhg1! now Black cannot take it as Rxg7+ leads to checkmate. 18...f6 19.Bg6 Nd3+ 20.Kb1 Nxe5 21.Bxe5 fxe5 22.Qh5 Rf6 23.Rxg5 bringing more pieces into the attack is always a great idea. 23...Qd6 24.Qh7+ Kf8 25.Qh8+ Ke7 26.Qxg7+Kd8 27.Rh5 threatening Rh8+ 27...Rf8 28.Rxd5! and it's over. White just gave absolutely no chance to his opponent.
