Women's World Cup SF1: Calm before storm?

by Shahid Ahmed - 22/07/2025

It is the Semifinals of FIDE Women's World Cup 2025 which means stakes are very high. A place in the Finals, coveted spot in the next Women's Candidates, medal and good cash prize, all are on the line. So, no one would want to make a mistake early in the match. Both matches, GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) and GM Koneru Humpy, and also IM Divya Deshmukh and GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) ended in quiet draws. We may get to know at least one finalist tomorrow, or wait one further day to find them both. Round 6/Semifinal Game 2 starts tomorrow at 3 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. Photo: FIDE/Anna Shtourman

Testing waters

All four players would be testing the waters to see if their respective opponent is prepared enough or breaks under pressure.

Tingjie - Humpy: 0.5-0.5

GM Tingjie Lei (CHN, 2557) and GM Koneru Humpy (2536) played nine Classical rated games. Humpy has 5-4 score against her. Although, Tingjie has won three out of the last five games since last year, Humpy won one among them and the remaining ended in a draw. If recent statistics is anything to go by, Humpy has to be careful against her opponent.
