by Shahid Ahmed - 28/10/2023

GM Arjun Erigaisi drew against GM Alexey Sarana (SRB) in the third round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2023. He moves to 2.5/3. Nine other players are also at same score including the top seed GM Fabiano Caruana (USA). GM S L Narayanan and GM Aravindh Chithambaram drew against the new England no.1 GM Nikita Vitugov and GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) respectively. GM Raunak Sadhwani continues his great form as he shared the point with GM R Praggnanandhaa. GM Vidit Gujrathi scored his second win in-a-row, this time against GM Dmitrij Kollars (GER). IM Vaishali R played some fiery chess to beat IM Leya Garifullina. GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) and GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) are the only two coleaders with a perfect score 3/3. They will inevitably clash against each other in Round 4. It starts today at 2:30 p.m. local time, 7 p.m. IST. Photos: IM Sagar Shah

Vaishali - Leya

Position after 12.f6!

IM Vaishali R (2448) went for a thematica 12.f6! sacrifice. 12...Bxf6 13.e5 she revealed in the post-match analysis that she knew till this. In fact she played against IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) the same line at the very same event in previous edition in 2021. 13...Bg7 14.Ne4 Nb7 is the deviation from that game. Bibisara played 14...0-0 two years ago.

Position after 16.Bxe6!

16.Bxe6! is an amazing sacrifice. Although there is nothing concrete or an immediate win, the stranded black king at the center of the board, certainly gives an inkling that something's gotta give. 16...Bxe4 17.exd6 Nxd6 18.dxe4 Qb6 19.e5 Ndf5 20.Bd7+ and White won the game in another five moves.

Duda - Volodar

Final position after 67.Nxf6+

It is no secret that GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL, 2726) is an artist, a creative genius. He had a beautiful finish against GM Volodar Murzin (2633).

Kollars - Vidit

Position after 39...Nh6

In the above position, GM Dmitrij Kollars (GER, 2633) had an opportunity to almost force a draw 40.Bxg6! fxg6 41.Qa8+ Kg7 42.Qxa7+ Nf7 43.a5 and White's passed pawns are enough compensation for the pinned knight. 40.Qe4 Qc3 41.Be2? giving up the b3-pawn for Black's a7-pawn was not a good idea. Soon White landed in deep trouble.

Position after 51...Ng4

It is still not over. White can save the game. Find out how. 52.Qb6?? ended things for White after Qd2 53.Be4 c2
