Grand Swiss 2023 R5: Nakamura, Esipenko and Arjun Erigaisi in a three-way lead

by Shahid Ahmed - 30/10/2023

IM Vaishali R continues her great form at FIDE Grand Swiss Women 2023. She drew against GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) in the fifth round. She is also having a great event so far. IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) defeated GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) to gain sole lead 4.5/5. In the Open section, GM Arjun Erigaisi scored a victory against the Kazakhstan no.1, GM Rinat Jumabayev. Arjun joins GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and GM Andrey Esipenko in a three-way lead 4/5. GM Vidit Gujrathi shared the point with GM Evgeniy Najer. GM S L Narayanan defeated the India no.1 D Gukesh for the second time in two weeks. Round 6 starts today at 2:30 p.m. local time, 7 p.m. IST. Photo: IM Sagar Shah

Vaishali draws against Anna Muzychuk, Bibisara emerges sole leader

GM Vidit Gujrathi is the sole Indian at 3.5/5, out of the 16 pursuers. In the Women's event, WGM Savitha Shri B and IM Vantika Agrawal drew against IM Mai Narva (EST) and GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI). Arjun - Rinat: 1-0

GM Arjun Erigaisi (2712) has never lost a Classica or Blitz rated game against the Kazakhstan no.1 GM Rinat Jumabayev (KAZ, 2585). That statistic remained unchanged yesterday.

Position after 54.Kf4

King activity is of paramount importance in the endgame. White did that when he went 54.Kf4. Black also needed to go 54...Ke6 immediately. 54...b5? reduced Black's chances after 55.g5 White went on to win the game after both players made mutual inaccuracies.

GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA) won against GM Alexey Sarana (SRB) to get into the three-way lead

Firouzja - Niemann: 0.5-0.5

GM Hans Niemann (USA, 2667) is yet to beat his contemporary GM Alireza Firouzja (FRA, 2777) in a Classical rated game. Both of them were born in the same year - 2003. Firouzja won their first Classical game in 2015 at World Under-12 championship. Their last Classical battle was at Sinquefield Cup 2022 last year. It ended in a draw. The American had a great opportunity to score his first win in a Classical rated game over the former World no.2.

Position after 26.Qd2??

White should have defended his knight 26.Ba6. Maybe White felt that 26...Bh3 or Rexf4 might turn out to be deadly but it was not. 26.Qd2?? Qxc4 27.Qxd7 now Black needed to play Rfe8 first to go for the win. Instead, he went 27...Re2? and White managed to save the game 28.Bxc6.

S L Narayanan - Gukesh: 1-0

India no.1 GM D Gukesh (2758) eliminated GM S L Narayanan (2651) at the FIDE World Cup 2023 few months ago. Since then Narayanan defeated Gukesh in the fifth round of the recently concluded Qatar Masters. Now he won again in the fifth round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2023.

Position after 15.g4

White made his intentions very clear about what he is playing for 15.g4 e4 might have opened the dark squared bishop's path but it also created a new future target for White. 16.Nd2 Qe7 17.Kb1 Kh8 18.Rhg1 Na4 19.gxf5 Nxc3+ 20.bxc3 Bxf5 21.Bxh5 b5 both players are launching an attack on each other's king. However, it is White whose attack turned out to be more effective than his opponent's.
