Tepe Sigeman & Co 2023 R5: Abhimanyu holds Gukesh to a draw, still in lead with Svidler

by Shahid Ahmed - 09/05/2023

Arjun Erigaisi suffered his third loss at 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. It seemed like the double rook endgame will end up being a draw when Arjun blundered. Jorden van Foreest (NED) does not miss these as he seized his opportunity. Abhimanyu Mishra held D Gukesh to a draw. World no.6 Anish Giri tweeted that the world's youngest GM was following his Sicilian Najdorf course. Peter Svidler drew against Vincent Keymer to maintain his lead with Abhimanyu 3.5/5. Sweden no.1 drew against the FIDE World Cup 2009 winner Boris Gelfand in an exciting game. Round 6 starts today at 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. Arjun loses his third game out of five

It is not everyday that Arjun loses more games than he won. Clearly something is going wrong. Only two games left at this event. He needs to figure out and fix things quickly to avoid a disaster.

Jorden - Arjun: 1-0

Arjun Erigaisi (2701) has never beaten Jorden van Foreest (NED, 2689) in a classical rated game. Earlier this year, Jorden won against him at 85th Tata Steel Masters. Their previous year encounter at this event ended in a draw. The double rook endgame seemed to be heading towards a draw until Arjun blundered.

Position after 47...Kg8

47...Kg7 would have kept everything in control. 47...Kg8?? 48.e6+- Rxe6 49.Rexe6 fxe6 50.Rxf8+ Kxf8 51.Kxg4 and Black resigned as the pawn ending is winning for White.
