12-year-old Avirat Chauhan shines in local rapid event, gains 50 Elo

Born in 2014, 12-year-old talent Avirat Chauhan wins the st Late MLA Vinayakrao Nimhan Memorial Open Fide Rapid Rating Chess Tournament held in Pune on the 2nd of August 2026.

Avirat receives the first prize of Rs.30,000!

With a dominating performance of 8.5/9 Avirat not only won the event but also gained 50 valuable rating points, pumping up his rapid FIDE rating of 2231.

The tournament was quite strong with many good players from Pune and adjoining regions taking part

Avirat's favourite game from the event was his 6th round win against Sourabh Mhamane (1959).

This is Avirat's 3rd rapid rating tournament victory of the year. The first one was 19th LBHM FIDE Rating tournament and the 2nd one was Children's Research university All India Open Rating.

Avirat is already rated 2301 in classical chess and will very likely become an IM soon. Rapid tournaments in India are quite tough as many players are lower rated. Hence, to win it in dominating style shows the strength of Avirat. We wish him the best for his next events and congratulate him for this performance!
