India's 98th GM S. Aswath got his final GM norm just a few days ago at the Pune GM Round Robin. After becoming a GM many players would have relaxed a bit. Celebrated a bit. But not Aswath. The Pune tournament ended on 8th of July 2026 and Aswath was on the chess board again on the 13th of July playing at the Serbia Open 2026.

And what a performance the youngster delivered! With a score of 7.5/9 - unbeaten and a rating performance of 2659, Aswath not only won the tournament, taking back home 5000 Euros but also gained precious 15.5 Elo points!

Aswath's scorecard

His key victory came in the penultimate round against GM Mitrabha Guha when Aswath won with the white pieces by trapping Mitrabha's queen!

The young Indian talent GM Ethan Vaz finished 3rd while the 2nd place went to FM Matfey Yurasov. India's Mitrabha Guha finished 4th.
