National Challengers 01-03: minor upsets in a non-rated Nationals

The National Challengers Championship 2016 opened at the Amity University in Noida, Delhi, as a non-rated event, for the first time in its 54-year-history. The tournament was expected to attract the stronger players into the tournament, now that there is no possibility for them to lose rating. But there was no change in the trend. The top two seeds had it easy, but some higher rateds did not survive their talented opponents. An illustrated report.

Harikrishna beats Ding Liren in Danzhou

Ding Liren is China's strongest grandmaster till date. In fact his preparation is so fierce that Magnus Carlsen himself invited the Chinese to a training camp to work with him. But in the third round of the Hainan Danzhou super tournament India's Harikrishna Pentala showed no such fear or respect for his opponent and boldly went into the highly theoretical line of the Open Ruy Lopez! The game was balanced on knife's edge and any mistake would have been fatal. Ding Liren was the first one to err and Harikrishna chalked up another victory over a World top ten player. A total of 97 players are participating in the XXXIX Open Internacional de Barberà del Vallès "A" tournament and 31 of them are Indians! The Indian challenge was led by GM Shyam Sundar M. and GM Murali Karthikeyan, followed by an array of international masters and under-rated Indians. Himanshu Sharma is performing admirably. He scored a GM norm in the previous event and is tied for the second place with 4.0/5. A briefly illustrated report.

The Chengdu Grand Prix is being hosted by China from 1-15th July 2016. In a range of stars, two Indians are in the fray, and not surprisingly, both of them have always been there for the nation in the Grand Prix cycle for quite some years now. Both Harika and Humpy have slowed down a bit, drawing their last two games rather insipidly. Humpy still leads with 4.0/5, while she is followed by Harika and Wenjun at 3.5/5. An illustrated report.

Women's Challengers: Viji does it, yet again!

For the past few years, National Women Challengers Chess Championship is attracting a lot of IMs, WGMs, and WIMs, competing for the eight slots available in National Women Premier championship. Premier championship is the prime event, leading to the selection of Indian team for Olympiad and other international events. The 2016 edition was won by IM S. Vijayalakshmi, while Michelle Catherina took the second place. Swati Ghate rallied well in the second half but missed out the third spot to M. Mahalakshmi. An illustrated report.

On the graduation day of Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Shahrukh Khan, one of the most eminent actors in Bollywood, was the chief guest. Harika had begun with two consecutive victories putting her in the lead with 2.0/2. Humpy, who was at the second spot, then one-upped Harika by winning three consecutive games. XXIV Open Internacional Ciutat De Montcada began on 25 June 2016 at Montcada, a municipality in Catalonia, Spain. The Indians, traditionally, have made a beeline for playing the Catalonian circuit, often going in groups to play and enjoy. The year 2016, though, saw Indians invade Spain. A total of 117 players are participating in the Montcada tournament and 32 of them are Indians, that is, 27%! Indian grandmaster Shyam Sundar M. tied for the first place but took the second place on the tie-break. Snehal Bhosale scored an IM norm and IM Himanshu Sharma made a GM norm. An illustrated report.
