The Women's chess World Championship 2017 begins from tomorrow in Tehran, Iran. Mired in controversy regarding the compulsory wearing of hijab, the event is finally taking place. India has a bright hope for the World Champion's title in Harika Dronavalli, who is the fourth seed.We also have the young gun Padmini Rout. A blitz tournament for a few hours, consisting of nine rounds, was held at Malleswaram, Banglore. One International master took part. However, it was untitled Shiva S who won the event with 7.5/9. PSPB teams are not participating in this year's National Teams 2017. But this does not reduce the excitement. In the open section we have four teams vying for the top spot: AAI, Railways A and B, and Air India. It will be a close finish as AAI and Railways A are really well matched. In the women's section Air India is a clear favourite, but the young team from AAI would be looking to stage an upset.
