Ram Prakash decimates 1st Mahakal Rapid Rating Open 2024

FM Ram Prakash scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Mahakal Rapid Rating Open 2024. Ram finished a half point ahead of the rest. GM Himanshu Sharma, IM Himal Gusain and Mraduhas Tripathi scored 8/9 each. They secured second, third and fourth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The winner, Ram drew with the eventual runner-up and only GM in the field, Himanshu, in the penultimate round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹125000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. The two-day nine-round Swiss league rating tournament was organized by Ujjaini District Chess Association at Standford International School in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on 21st and 22nd December. 15th Chennai GM Open R5-6: Crowded at the top

Nine players are sharing the lead 5/6 after the sixth round of 15th Chennai GM Open 2025. Top seed and India's highest rated IM Aronyak Ghosh got back to winning ways as he defeated CM V Sarveshwaran in Round 6. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy ended FM Rupesh Jaiswal's (NEP) unbeaten streak. 119th seeded Vijay Shreeram P defeated two IMs consecutively - Uurtsaikh Agibileg (MGL) and Sanket Chakravarty. He is the sole untitled player among the leaders' pack. FM Priyanshu Patil had a sharp battle versus IM Mayank Chakraborty in the fifth round. The former could have pushed for the maximum. Vaibhav Gautam and Raj Kapoor scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 2nd Kingdom of Chess Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024. Vaibhav won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Raj was placed second. Four players - Shanmukha Pulli, Shikhar Karn, Lakshit Pusri and Rudradaman Mertia scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to sixth respectively. Vaibhav drew with the eventual second runner-up, Shanmukha in the seventh round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1500000. The top three prizes were ₹111000, ₹71000 and ₹41000 along with a trophy each. The three-day nine-round Swiss league rating tournament was organized by Kingdom of Chess at Orbit Resort in Udaipur, Rajasthan from 21st to 23rd December. 15th Chennai GM Open R4: Iniyan and Ethan in a three-way lead

Top seed, IM Aronyak Ghosh drew with IM Kaustuv Kundu in Round 4 of 15th Chennai GM Open 2025. GM Iniyan Pa, IM Ethan Vaz and GM Siddharth Jagadeesh (SGP) have emerged the leaders with a perfect score 4/4. They defeated GM Venkatesh M R, IM Shahil Dey and IM Sathvik Adiga respectively. Untitled Bhaavan Kolla held GM Cristhian Camilo Rios Gomez (COL) to a well contested draw. Currently, seven players including six Indians are in pursuit at 3.5/4 each. Varun V seized his opportunity against GM P Shyam Nikhil to move his score 3.5/4. Round 5 starts today at 10 a.m. IST.

S L Narayanan clear first at Groningen Chess Festival Open 2024

GM S L Narayanan scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win Chess Festival Groningen Open A (>2100) 2024. The top seed finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - GM Thomas Beerdsen (GER), IM Nick Maatman (NED), IM Manish Anto Cristiano F and IM Theo Stijve (SUI) scored 6.5/9 each. They shared second place. The total prize fund of the festival was €9750, €8000 for Open A. The top three prizes were €2500 + 'The Silver Zwanepol', €1500 and €900 each. The ten-day nine-round Swiss league rating tournament was organized by Stichting Schaakfestival Groningen Sportcentrum RUG & Hanze in Groningen, Netherlands from 21st to 30th December 2024. Bharat drew with the eventual runner-up, Naitik in the seventh round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1100000. Eleven players including Bhaavan Kolla have made a perfect start at 15th Chennai GM Open 2025. Bhaavan is the sole untitled player among the leaders pack. 13-year-old, IM Sathvik Adiga, the youngest with perfect score 3/3, had to work hard against Dinesh Rajan M to win a long queen endgame which lasted over 55 moves. The top three seeds - IM Aronyak Ghosh, GM Siddharth Jagadeesh (SGP) and GM Iniyan Pa, have scored comfortable wins so far. In Round 2, Siddhant Gawai, Siddhanth Poonja and Mayukh Majumder held GM Cristhian Camilo Rios Gomez (COL), GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) and GM Evgeniy Podolchenko to a draw each respectively. Vijay Shreeram P scored the biggest upset of the first round of 15th Chennai GM Open 2025. He defeated GM Manik Mikulas (SVK). The 15th edition of the tournament witnesses the participation of 174 players including 16 GMs, 25 IMs and 4 WIMs in Category A from 19 countries across the world including India. Category B (Below 2000) is also underway and will conclude on 5th January. Category C (Below 1800) will take place from 6th to 8th January. The total prize fund of Category A is ₹2000000. CM Md. Reyan (BIH), CM Prathamesh Sherla (MAH) and Pranav Sai Ram R S (TN) scored 9/11 each at 37th National Under-13 Open 2024. Reyan won the tournament due to better tie-break score, Prathamesh and Pranav secured second and third place respectively. Reyan drew with Prathamesh and lost to Pranav. Saranya Devi Narahari (TEL) scored 9/11 to become the champion in the Girls event. She finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four girls - Nivedita V C (TN), Nihira Koul (MAH), Aamuktha Guntaka (AP) and Deekshitha Modipalli (TEL) scored 8.5/11 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively. Four Indians in World Top 13

Arjun Erigaisi maintained his rating 2801 and place World no.4 with a second place finish at Qatar Masters 2024. D Gukesh became 18th World Champion after dethroning Ding Liren (CHN). He lost a few rating points, however, he retained his World no.5 rank. R Praggnanandhaa won a game at SchachBundesliga. It fetched him 3.5 Elo rating points and moved him up to World no.13. Aravindh Chithambaram continues his ascension. He gained 7.8 Elo rating points to move to 2726 and World no.23. Currently, there are three Indians in World top 10, four in top 13, six in top 24 and nine in top 48. Among the Women, WGM Nandhidhaa P V is the highest gainer with 40.8 points. Safin Safarullakhan and Hatim Bendriss (MAR) scored 7/8 each at XV Gran Hotel Bali Nocturno Blitz 2024 Group B Sub-2000. 10-year-old Safin won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Hatim secured second place. Four players - David Blanco Garcia Bajo (ESP), Mario Antonanzas Fernandez (ESP), Kevin D'Souza and Yohan Boricha scored 6.5/8 each. They secured third to sixth place respectively. The total prize fund was €2000, €1000 for each Open and Sub-2000 categories. The top three prizes in each group were €300, €200 and €120 along with a trophy each.
