D Gukesh played his first Classical game at Grand Chess Tour Superbet Classic 2024 after winning FIDE Candidates a couple of months ago. He won the game against the Romania no.2 - Bogdan-Daniel Deac. However, it was not a smooth victory. In fact, at one point in the middlegame, Gukesh captured his opponent's centralized knight incorrectly. It gave his opponent a chance to gain a substantial advantage. He missed it and Gukesh went on to capitalize on his material advantage eventually. Fabiano Caruana (USA) scored the only other win of the round against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). R Praggnanandhaa had a well contested draw against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). It will be Ian Nepomniachtchi vs Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa vs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the second round. Round 2 starts today from 3 p.m. local time, 5:30 p.m. IST. After 5 rounds of play, there is a 4-way tie at the top with 4.5/5 points - Naveen Kumar A (1986, AP), Venkata Krishna Karthik K (1889,AP), Samarth J Rao (1770, KAR) and Nabhneel Das (1520, UP) are co-leading with 4.5/5 points. Kaustuv Kundu conquers 14th Chess for Youth 2024

IM Kaustuv Kundu scored an unbeaten 6.5/7 to win Century Ply presents 14th Chess for Youth 2023 Premier (Under-25) section. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Sagnik Dutta and top seed, GM Koustav Chatterjee scored 6/7 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund for the Premier section was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹50000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each respectively. This is Kaustuv's fourth tournament triumph of the year. The tournament was supposed to conclude on 27th May 2024. However, due to the intense and deathly presence of tropical cyclone Remal, the organizers were forced to postpone the final day of action to 29th May when it concluded. It is not every day one get to witness an arbiter winning a tournament. FIDE Arbiter Unni Krishnan M A who is also the Managing Director of International School of Chess won 33rd CUSAT Rating Open 2024. He scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 and finished a half point ahead of the field. Five players - Ajjesh J R, Balkishan A, Arul Anandh S P K, Praveen K B and Unas K A scored 7/8 each. They secured second to sixth place according to tie-breaks. Apart from Balkishan and Praveen, the remaining in top six remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹25000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. The four-day eight round rating tournament was organized by Department of Physical Education CUSAT from 27th to 30th May at CUSAT Campus in Kochi, Kerala. This is Unni Krishnan's first rating tournament triumph of the year.

Brunth Sundar Nitish scored 6.5/9 to win Norway Chess Open Elo Group 2024. Marcin Zielinski (POL) scored 6.5/9 to secure second place. However, prize money is shared between the same scoring players as per tournament rules. Alina Shehzad (NOR) edged past five more players on tie-breaks to finish third. Despite a rough start 1.5/4, Brunth made a fantastic comeback by winning his last five games in-a-row to become the champion. IM Svyatoslav Bazakutsa (UKR) won the GM group scoring 7/9. The top three prizes in Elo group were €400, €250 and €150 each. FM FI Bernhard Stillger (GER) scored sole 5.5/7 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Eight players scored 5/7 each. Out of them CM Maurice Gulatz (GER) was placed third due to better tie-break scores. The top three prizes in Open A were €600, €400 and €250 along with a trophy each. Chiranjit Manna and Sarwar Hossain Ullash (BAN) scored 4/5 each at Chess Track 5th Classical Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024. Chiranjit won the tournament as he defeated Sarwar in the penultimate round. Jewel Khan (BAN) scored 3.5/5 to finish third. Chiranjit also won Chess Track 34th Blitz Below 2000 Rating Tournament scoring 6/7 and finishing a full point ahead of the rest. Rayan Rashid Mugdho (BAN) and Kazi Saiyf (BAN) scored 5/7 each to be placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. However, Arjun used this setback as motivation and today, he has become the number one player in India and currently ranks fourth in the world. GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) made a quick 19-move draw against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) to win 4th Cairns Cup 2024. Since a draw was enough for her to finish clear first, there was no point in risking it. The FIDE Women's Candidates 2024 winner scored an unbeaten 6/9 and finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) scored her second consecutive win of the event. She defeated IM Alice Lee (USA) in the final round to secure a clear second place 5.5/9. This is also her consecutive second place after the inaugural Norway Chess Women 2024.
