Jorden Van Foreest wins Head-to-Head Match against Ediz Gürel in Ankara

A 12-game match between Ediz Gürel and Jorden Van Foreest was held in Ankara from 11th to 17th February under the auspices of the Turkish Chess Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The event brought together one of Turkey’s young and accomplished Grandmasters, GM Ediz Gürel, and Dutch Grandmaster GM Jorden van Foreest. The match had six classical games, two Rapid Freestyle (Chess960) games, and four Blitz games, making a total of 12 encounters. Jorden Van Foreest convincingly wins the series with 19.5-6.5 points. The event has been recorded as a significant occasion in terms of contributing to Türkiye’s young athletes’ international experience and supporting the development of chess in the country. Jorden Van Foreest showed his class

After a week of intense competition, Dutch Grandmaster GM Jorden van Foreest delivered an outstanding performance, winning the series and finishing with 19.5 points. Turkish Grandmaster GM Ediz Gürel completed the tournament with 6.5 points. Points scored in classical games were multiplied by 3, points scored in rapid (Freestyle) games multiplied by 2, and points scored in blitz games multiplied by 1. Jorden scored (4.5-1.5) in Classical, (1.5-0.5) in Freestyle, and (3-1) in Blitz format to win the series.

Classical Section: Jorden Van Foreest - Ediz Gürel (4.5-1.5)

Jorden started the classical section by winning his first game against Ediz with the white pieces and taking the early lead, but Ediz struck back immediately in the second game and won with the white pieces. Again, in the 3rd game Van Foreest won and took a point lead, and after this he never saw back and drew the game 4, and won the last 2 games in a row to make it 4.5-1.5.

Replay Classical Games

Freestyle and Blitz

The final day, 17 February, started with the two Freestyle games, played at a rapid time control of 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. In the first of these, Van Foreest obtained the initiative and won. The second game ended in a draw.

The contest concluded with four blitz games. The first two encounters were drawn, while Van Foreest won both the third and fourth games of the series. The blitz segment therefore ended 3–1 in his favour.

This special organization, implemented within the scope of the protocol we signed with our Ministry of Youth and Sports, once again demonstrates the international vision and ambition of Turkish chess. For our young Grandmaster Ediz Gürel to compete against a world-class opponent like Jorden van Foreest in different time controls is extremely valuable in terms of both sporting development and gaining experience. We attach great importance to organizing such high-quality events in our country. I would like to extend my thanks to our Ministry of Youth and Sports, the General Directorate of Youth Services, and the Director General of Youth Services, Dr. Enes Efendioğlu, for their significant contributions to the realization of this organization. In the upcoming period, we will continue to bring our athletes together with the world’s best and further advance Turkish chess.
