Havelock City Mall Checkmate 2026: Bringing Chess to the Heart of the Public
Chess tournaments are traditionally hosted in schools, hotels, clubs, and dedicated sports venues. However, for the second consecutive year, Havelock City Mall in Colombo is redefining that norm by bringing competitive chess into one of Sri Lanka's busiest public spaces. The Havelock City Mall Checkmate 2026 Chess Fiesta will take place on 20th and 21st June 2026, continuing an innovative initiative that aims to make chess more visible, accessible, and engaging for the general public.
Impact on Crowd
Following the tremendous success of last year's edition, the organizers have once again created a platform where competitive chess meets community entertainment.
What makes this event particularly special is its venue. Shopping malls attract thousands of visitors daily for shopping, dining, and leisure activities. By hosting a chess tournament in such an environment, the organizers are allowing countless members of the public to experience tournament chess firsthand. Children, parents, and casual visitors who may never have attended a chess event before can watch games in progress, interact with players, and witness the sport's intensity and beauty up close.
I am delighted to be a part of this wonderful initiative and will have the privilege of attending as the Chief Guest on 20th June. On the following day, the event will be graced by WFM Suneetha Wijesooriya, a pioneer of Sri Lankan chess and one of the country's most respected chess personalities - WIM Sachini Ranasinghe
The festival will feature two separate Blitz Chess Tournaments with a 3+2 time control, one on each day. Participation is open to players aged 8 and above, with a maximum capacity of 200 participants per tournament, for up to 400 participants across the two-day festival. The event is expected to attract a strong field of players from across Sri Lanka, creating two days of exciting and hard-fought chess.
Participants will compete for the prestigious Overall Champion title along with several other award categories. Attractive prizes, trophies, gift vouchers, and certificates will be on offer, providing both recognition and motivation for players of all ages and skill levels.
Beyond the chessboards, Havelock City Mall has planned a variety of family-friendly activities designed to create a complete festival experience. A dedicated fun zone featuring drawing activities, face painting, games, and entertainment will ensure that the event appeals not only to chess players but also to the wider community.
As chess continues to grow in popularity across Sri Lanka, initiatives such as the Havelock City Mall Checkmate 2026 play a vital role in expanding the game's reach beyond traditional tournament halls.
