Serbia Open 2022 R3: Harikrishnan outplays Serbia no.1 Aleksandar Indjic

by Shahid Ahmed - 01/07/2022

GM B Adhiban started the tournament with three consecutive wins at Serbia Open 2022 Masters. IM Harikrishnan A Ra arguably scored the most spectacular win of the round. He defeated Serbia no.1 GM Aleksandar Indjic convincingly. The 20-year-old got a winning position within the first 20 moves of the game. FM Ram Aravind L N scored a nice victory against IM Sugar Gan-Erdene (MGL). The former showed a fantastic understanding of the position. IM Padmini Rout and WIM Sakshi Chitlange both are at 2.5/3 each. Round 4 starts today at 7:30 p.m. IST. Photo: FI Niklesh Jain

Adhiban starts with a hat-trick

IM Padmini Rout, CM Kushagra Mohan, WIM Sakshi Chitlange, FM Kashish Manoj Jain and Ajay Mushini drew with GM G Petar Arnaudov (BUL), IM P Shyam Nikhil, IM Zhandos Agmanov (KAZ), IM Nitish Belurkar and IM Tania Sachdev, respectively.

Indjic - Harikrishnan: 0-1

IM Harikrishnan A Ra (2396) is a very strong player. When GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB, 2620) erred early in the middlegame, he seized his opportunity and got a winning position in less than 20 moves of the game.

Position after 17.exf5

17.exf5 invites trouble as both black bishops are piercing on White's kingside. 17...Bxh2+ was the first strike 18.Kxh2 Qxd4 19.Be2 and now Black is winning in multiple ways. 19...Rxf5 was played. The alternative was 19...Qxd5.

Gan-Erdene - Ram Aravind: 0-1

IM Sugar Gan-Erdene (MGL, 2428) missed a thematic break 24.f5. When an opportunity arose, FM Ram Aravind L N (2138) pounced on it.

Position after 38...d4

38.Bd2 allowed Black open the light squared bishop's diagonal 38...d4. 38.Rfb1 would have kept things balanced. A series of inaccuracies by White and a precise play by Black, earned him a full point.
