MPL National Sub-Junior 2022 R2-3: Pranav and Pranesh start with a hat-trick

by Shahid Ahmed - 06/03/2022

11 players in MPL 46th National Sub-Junior Open and seven in 37th National Sub-Junior Girls are at 3.0/3. Both IMs from Tamil Nadu, Pranav Venkatesh and IM Pranesh M started with three wins. However, Jai Sankar Subramanian (TN) had a good opportunity to draw with Pranav in the second round. In the Girls event, former National Under-11 Girls champion, Anupam Sreekumar (KER) was held to a draw by Debapriya Manna (WB) in Round 2. Top seed Sarayu Velpula (TEL) was on the brink of defeat several times against Sachi Jain (DEL). She somehow managed to escape with a draw. Pournami S (KER) held second seed Mrittika Mallick (WB) to a draw. Round 4 starts today at 9:00 a.m. IST today. Photo: Aditya Sur Roy

Sarayu survives a scare against Sachi

Sachi Jain (DEL) got plenty of opportunities to strike against the top seed Sarayu Velpula (TEL). However, she was unable to capitalize on all of them. Eventually the game ended in a draw.

Open Round 2: Pranav - Jai: 1-0

IM Pranav Venkatesh (TN) was relatively better for the majority of the middlegame against Jai Sankar Subramanian (TN).

Position after 42...Ne8

43.Bxd8 wins immediately for White as Black cannot avoid a material loss in all probably variations. The game continued 43.Qe3 and Black somehow managed to liquidate into a relatively equal bishop vs knight endgame.

Position after 59.Bxg5+

59...Kxg5 ensures a draw for Black. However, 59...hxg5 was played and White won the game as the outside passed pawn on h5 allowed the king to gain an entry from the queenside after 60.a5.

Aaditya - Reyan: 0-1

CM Aaditya Dhingra (HAR) lost to National Online under-10 2021 champion Md. Reyan (BIH)

Position after 28...e5

Despite having a bishop which combines well with rooks, White is unable to maximize it as the position is relatively closed. The knight being well-placed on c5 and Black getting the opportunity to play 28...e5 shifts the balance in his favor. Rest is just a matter of technique which Black converted into a win without any difficulty.

Round 3: Paarth - Harshad: 0.5-0.5

Paarth P Salvi (Goa) was completely winning against FM Harshad S (TN).

Position after 34...Bc8

35.cxb5 with the idea of Bc4, Bf1 is completely winning for White. There is no counterplay against it. The game continued 35.Bc2 Kg8 36.Rxe8 Rxe8 37.Be4 Bg4 38.Bh7+ Kxh7 39. Qxg4 Qxg4 40.Nxg4 and White's advantage evaporated. Soon tables turned completely and Black got a winning opportunity.

Position after 48.Re7

Both 48...Kc3 and Rxd5 are completely winning for Black. After a lot of inaccuracies by Black, White's tenacious play allowed him to escape with a draw.

Round 3: Sachi - Sarayu: 0.5-0.5

Sachi Jain (DEL) got herself plenty of opportunities to win against the top seed, Telangana State Under-19 and Women champion Sarayu Velpula.

Position after 26...Bxe4

White had plenty of opportunities to play Nxg7, at least on three different occasions. Perhaps the best moment was after 26...Bxe4. Now 27.Nxg7 followed by Rxf7 is a crushing attack for White. Black would not have been able to defend it. The attack fizzled out 27.Bxe4 Rxe4 28.Bc5 Re6 29.Bxf8 Qxf8 and Black averted a loss.
